What’s The REAL COST Of Living In Florida: Breakdown Of Our Monthly Expenses
If you're considering moving to Tampa Bay or anywhere in the Sunshine State and wondering what it cost to live In Florida, your search has ended!
Today, we're sharing our monthly expenses: housing, including taxes and homeowners insurance, healthcare, childcare, auto prices and insurance, groceries and dining, utilities, internet, and even pool and lawn care. This practical breakdown will help you plan your budget effectively.
For decades, Florida was known as a beautiful place to live with a very low cost of living, attracting people from high-cost-of-living areas like New York, NY; Washington, DC; Chicago, IL; Miami, FL; Boston, MA; Los Angeles, CA; Philadelphia, PA; Seattle, WA; San Francisco, CA; and Atlanta, GA. But over the past five years, inflation has increased the cost of insurance and buying a home.
Kate and I know that our monthly budget may look very different from yours, but we wanted to be as transparent as possible about what it really costs us to live in Florida.

Great video 👍 I did the same thing in 1999, after my dad passed away 1998 when I was 21 I decided to save to move to Tampa Florida by myself. I'm from NY and lived in NJ which was expensive. NJ: Car inspections every year, tolls everywhere, cold 🥶, state tax, pay for dirty beaches, traffic, cops pull you over often. Florida: beautiful free beaches, less tolls, was less expensive but now expensive, no car inspection, no state tax, but more gun violence and can't swim in lakes or pond because gators and big bugs. Visiting Florida just stay away from ponds.

We started to transition to the Melbourne area in 21. I joined a RE tea, the team shut down and didnt plan for thie scenario and our move to Florida plan didnt work due to not planning for "everything"... so out olan fail due to we failed to plan. Good thing we didn't sell our primary home in Indianapolis and we just ended our apartment lease in Melbourne. Loved the lifestyle of the ability to be outside anytime of the year and on the beach during Christmas.

In July, I’ll be here 55 years. I left for five years to get good medical because we don’t have that in Florida, but I came back because of the weather. The weather does not bother. Natives were used to it. What’s kicking our butt is the high cost of living . not being able to get homeowners insurance to protect your property from the storm in one of the big downfalls every new community has an HOA. Nobody wants an HOA.

Coincidentally, I left Florida 6 years ago (lived there 10 yrs), and just moved back to Detroit 😂 I dont miss Florida at all. ❤ The winters are gorgeous, the summer hurricanes and 24/7 warnings ugh .... bugs; roaches, summer humidity. I was 18 yrs in real estate & finance. Tampa, Seminole, New Port Richey. 😊 BUT, it really feels good to be back home in michigan again. ❤

My perspective. I moved here two years ago, as a retiree. I had visited Florida several times a couple decades ago, so I had a feel for the weather patterns. Being from up north, it's really a choice between experiencing too cold up there, or too hot down here. I like warm weather, so I'm not complaining. One thing they don't tell you is that when you get into the summer months, it rains, usually thunderstorms, just about every day. Fortunately, it's not all day long, and it's generally predictable. It's part of the afternoon, and typically one hour later, you'd never know it had rained. So plan the errands in the morning. Some time ago someone from Ft Myers asked me if I was bothered by heavy traffic at commute times. I live in Lehigh Acres, just east of Ft Myers, and my response was, what heavy traffic? Lehigh is a growing area of about 125,000 people. It's far enough away from the coast that hurricane Ian didn't really have a major effect. We lost power and clean water for a couple days, some traffic signs were knocked over, and some homes needed roof (shingle) repair. That's pretty minor considering that coastal parts of Ft Myers got clobbered. Not all of Ft Myers. I had started my home search, looking for a condo, and got outbid on several homes, from Naples, Venice, Ft Myers, Punta Gorda, and others. Eventually I decided to switch to town homes instead. That turned out to be what I really wanted. I have a 2 car garage (most condos don't have garages). My home is over 1500 square feet, and it was built fairly recently in 2019, in a gated community. In fact, most properties in Lehigh tend to be newer than average homes anywhere from Tampa to Naples. My car insurance increased after the first year, so I talked to an agent, and we were able to reduce the bill, so that I am now paying less than I did 2 years ago. There were items like paying for lost wages if an uninsured motorist hit my car. Ummm, what lost wages? I'm retired. It's still more than what I was paying in Canada, and my Canada bill was more that what I was paying in New England, but it's a reasonable number. My home insurance saw a significant increase this year. Once again, I talked to an agent, and she was able to reduce my bill by about 30%. I am now paying less than what I paid last year. Just under $1200 for the year. Some things were eliminated. Some things were reduced, like insurance on household goods. Now if you have a family of 4, this number might be reasonable, but for a single or couple, it's likely too high. Property tax I consider to be a little high, but when I compare what taxes are now in NH, where I used to live, they pay a lot more up there, for a lot less living space. All in all, I'm happy to be down here. My Social Security isn't taxed by Florida, although the Feds still tax it, on a sliding scale; hope that changes, and they get rid of SS tax.

As a 50 year old native born Tampon, who's lived here my entire life, I think you nailed it pretty well here. Growing up here was heaven. We had all the amenities, the major league sports teams, beaches, and attractions that tourists go to, but with a much smaller fraction of the traffic, overpopulation, and cost of living. Insurance and property taxes have gone through the roof, and the traffic has become indescribably miserable, seemingly overnite. I guess growing up with this heat and weather, it doesn't bother me as much, but the mosquitoes are impossible to get used to. Lol

I’m not local to Tampa but I am in the Orlando metro area. I can tell you this video makes some good points but it makes light of how bad it truly is. It so bad I’ve started to get info on moving out of the state. It has become so expensive over crowded and the small town feel went away completely. Even though it’s ranked as one of the best places in regards to taxes everything went up In price so it balances out to saving nothing. Smh. I miss the old Florida but it looks like it’s never going back to what it once was. I’m down to three possible states to move to Texas, South Carolina, or Georgia.

I pay $5000.00 a year for homeowners insurance with a mitigation report, live in Pembroke Pines, in South Florida 10.5 miles from the beach. I wish I paid $2500.00 a year. My water bill is over $100.00 for 2 people and my lawn service is $45.00 a week. I have a large circular driveway and concrete patio on the back. I wouldn't recommend anyone to ever move to Florida - 1) unless if you are in a pool or on the beach you can never be outside - just run from one air conditioned area to the next. 2) look at the flooding in the last few days - most of Florida is now flood prone to "once in a lifetime" flood events yearly. Thousands go homeless yearly because they can't keep up with the flood damage. 3) Florida is one of the top 3 worst places in the US you can live as far as major weather events for the next few decades - why get into a mortgage for 30 years when you will have to move anyway and won't be able to sell your property in the future? Edit: forgot to include - cape coral now has over 4000 condos on the market that is not selling because people are trying to get out.

Great video! When we move to Florida, we will sell our house in Kommiefornia and have about $400K to put down. Our criteria is for finding a house is a 5-10 minute drive from the beach and a marina for the boat, definitely a pool and would love some sort of view. Personally, I'd love a house on a canal to have the boat there instead of paying for a marina. We're open for the stretch from Clearwater down to Sarasota/Bradenton. When we move, we will also be moving with nothing but certain clothes and our doggos - and one crazy cat. Our current monthly food budget for a family of 4 (2 adults & 2 high schoolers - only on the weekends though) is roughly $1200. We are primarily focused on a carnivore diet. This does NOT include date night meals or family pizza night. Our current water bill is roughly $42 a month - we took out our lawns and put in rock. Our current electrical bill averages $200 a month. Our current gas bill averages $100 a month. Our garbage/sewer is a set $206 every other month. Our cheapest gas is around $5.29 a gallon. Our state tax rate is a little over 13%. Our auto insurance for the G Wagon and convertible Audi is $225 a month. Our health insurance through my wife's work (I am self-employed - Broker) is $1000 a month. Our current mortgage is just under $2K a month at 2.5%. Our cell phone is $160 a month. Our property tax is $6K a year. What else am I missing?

So, my costs will be significantly lower. High speed internet is must, so it's good to get an idea of that potential cost.

If you didn’t own prior to covid, you’ll need to be very wealthy to move to Florida if you plan to buy. One more storm and insurance will price most out permanently if it hasn’t already. The dollar is worth half since the printing. Prices will remain double for everything. This doesn’t include new roof and snowbirds neglect for decades by not renovating. Best of Luck.

One thing we agree on is the devaluation of the dollar. The FED’s goal is inflation. Every second, your money is not working for you; you are with less.

If you like nightlife, I have 2 words for you: St Petersburg. Multiple choices for music, clubbing, barhopping every night. I think St Pete is the best thing about Tampa Bay.

Chose to relocate to New Port Richey FL from Palm Harbor FL after my retirement in 2017, primarily due to the sales tax half a point lower. State base sales tax is 6% while it's only 7% here. Real estate is more affordable so I paid cash for my 1800 Sq ft home with $850 HOA a month. Like you, I'm ten minutes to the beach. High and dry 😁 I wanted to sell my place for something smaller then the inflation set in. Now I'm stuck. Love Florida, been here since 93. Love your channel and welcome to Paradise.

Lol it’s crazy I’m paying less per month for mortgage and property taxes for a $1.4 million house in So Cal versus what you guys pay in Tampa! Wow! My mortgage is $2450 a month and monthly property tax amount is about $250 a month. So about $2,700 a month.
